Ancient stone against an Irish sky — defiant, enduring, alone.

From outside the walls of Three Castle Head, the main tower rises against the sky above the Mizen Peninsula — its weathered stone worn by eight centuries of Atlantic wind and rain, yet still standing with quiet authority. Built in 1207 by Donagh O’Mahony as a Norman-era stronghold, the castle held by his family for over 400 years before finally falling to the British Crown in 1627. Photographed in monochrome in July 2024, this upward perspective strips the scene to its essentials: texture, form, and the sheer presence of a structure that has outlasted everything around it.

Legend has it that the castle is haunted by a White Lady — an omen of death for any who see her.
