Step inside, and eight centuries close around you.
From within the ancient enclosure at Three Castle Head, two of the three towers rise together against the sky — the main keep and a second structure, framed by the 100-foot curtain wall that once connected them. Built in 1207 by Donagh O’Mahony, the castle’s three towers and long stone wall were designed to be impregnable — running from the edge of sheer 100-metre sea cliffs to the freshwater lake of Dun Lough, controlling all access to the Mizen Peninsula. The O’Mahony family held it for over 400 years against the MacCarthys and Anglo-Norman challengers alike. Photographed looking upward in July 2024, this intimate perspective places you inside the ruin itself — surrounded by stone that has witnessed it all.
Legend has it that the castle is haunted by a White Lady — an omen of death for any who see her.
