Where the lough meets the ruins, and the Atlantic waits beyond.
This wider view of Three Castle Head takes in the full drama of the setting — the ancient tower ruins above, and the still, dark waters of Dun Lough below. The lake is no accident of nature: when Donagh O’Mahony built his stronghold here in 1207, he chose this narrow isthmus deliberately — the freshwater lake on one side, sheer 100-metre sea cliffs on the other, and a 100-foot curtain wall connecting three towers across the gap. The result was a fortress that appeared truly impregnable, and which the O’Mahony family held for over 400 years. Photographed in monochrome in July 2024, this image is less a portrait of a ruin and more a portrait of a place — remote, elemental, and carrying the weight of eight centuries of history.
Legend has it that the castle is haunted by a White Lady — an omen of death for any who see her.
