Pure effortless flight.
Seen from above, wings spread wide, a Fulmar glides silently over the steel-grey North Sea far below. This bird has been captured in its element — a master of the air currents that sweep up the chalk cliffs at RSPB Bempton — in a perspective that puts you right there on the clifftop, looking down as it passes beneath you.
Fulmars are extraordinary fliers, spending most of their lives at sea and returning to the cliffs only to breed. Despite their gull-like appearance they are actually related to albatrosses, and watching one work the updrafts at Bempton is one of British birdwatching's great pleasures.
